China has now banned Animal Crossing: New Horizons and halted its sales within its borders
Well, it looks like China is at it again. Nintendo’s latest hit game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, allows players to decorate their own island and even invite other players to visit. One player, Joshua Wong, who is a Hong Kong democracy activist, took his protest into the game. In Twitter, he posted a banner for his island which says “Free Hong Kong, revolution now”. As expected, China has now banned the game and halted its sales within its borders.

New Horizons allows players to create their own in-game designs for things like clothing, wallpapers, and art displays. It is suspected that some players had been creating designs that were deemed to be offensive to Chinese leaders.Again, this hasn’t been confirmed or acknowledged by the Chinese government, but it’s no surprise that people would jump to that conclusion, especially since players in Hong Kong were using the game as a new means of protesting against the government.

Under Chinese law, video games can't contain anything that "threatens China's national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity". They can't harm "the nation's reputation, security or interests". They can't promote cults, or "superstitions". They can't "incite obscenity, drug use, violence or gambling" - although loot boxes are, of course, fine - and they can't include anything that "harms public ethics" or China's "culture and traditions". They also can't include any "other content" that might violate China's constitution or law, whatever that may be, and they have to be published in China by a Chinese company. Nintendo Switch sales only launched in China in December, through a partnership between Nintendo and Tencent. However, multiplayer connections for games may only be accessed by players through foreign editions available on the gray market sites such as Taobao and Pinduoduo.Since Wong’s tweets, there has been a crackdown against Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Reuters reported.

China censors content, including video games, if the government finds them in violation of the country’s core socialist values. However, it remains unclear if the ban on the sale of the game was ordered by China’s content regulator, or if it was a voluntary act by the digital stores. To circumvent the action against the game, some Taobao sellers have been trying to direct potential buyers to listings that sell the game without its title in the descriptions.
